Nothing Dull about Dullstroom

Dullstroom, South Africa · About Adventure

By Anita Draycott

Dullstroom, about 250 km from Johannesburg, is a quirky slice of South Africa. Lots of folks who live in Joburg like to come to unwind in this hamlet with a distinctively British country vibe. Rose covered cottages, pubs, fresh air and not a traffic light in sight make it the ideal weekend retreat from the hustle of Johannesburg.

But who would ever guess that Dullstroom also boasts “the largest whisky menu in the southern hemisphere?” At Wild About Whisky, a pub and shop you can choose from 1400 whiskeys from 22 countries including Scotland, Ireland, Burma and India. Tutored tastings cover a wide assortment of themes—from a Speyside Ramble to Top of the Irish.

You might also check out the trout fishing venues, clay pigeon shooting range, year-round Christmas shop and microbrewery. At Mrs. Simpson’s restaurant, named after the infamous Duchess of Windsor (her most famous quote: “You can never be too rich or too thin”) you’ll meet the Wallis, the cat who seems to have quite a cult following.
